Mechanical SteamWhale at the Nantucket Hotel

At the end of the Whaling Industry on Nantucket — what if we were able to build mechanical whales for a new successful era of transport and tourism?

The kinetic and interactive Steampunk Mechanical and Pneumatic Whale sculpture was created for the lobby of the newly renovated and historic Nantucket Hotel & Resort on Nantucket Massachusetts. The project was a collaboration between Sam Ostroff of Salmon Studios and Bruce Rosenbaum of ModVic. The whale is activated by a hidden switch within a ship’s binnacle at the front desk of the hotel. The whale’s mouth and tail moves, with windows to its interior to see the mechanics of movement. A webcam in its blowhole monitors the front lobby.
