
What happens when high school and college scholars are asked to build a machine that harnesses quantum mechanics using Victorian-era components? Pure, unbounded Steampunk creative magic.
ModVic’s own Bruce Rosenbaum recently traveled to Upstate New York to lead an interactive workshop at the 8th Annual Project Fibonacci STEAM Leadership Conference. The week-long conference brings together promising young leaders to tackle complex real-world challenges through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. While technical concepts took center stage throughout the event, Bruce brought the essential “Arts” to life by challenging scholars to think well outside the traditional box. In his workshop, student teams were given a wildly imaginative assignment: design and construct a functional, hands-on model of a re-imagined Steampunk Quantum Engine.
Using a mix of salvaged antiques, vintage gears, retro electronics, and modern materials, participants rolled up their sleeves to turn theoretical physics into tangible artwork. The exercise went far beyond simple craftwork—it introduced the young leaders to Janusian thinking, a creative problem-solving technique based on pairing two opposing ideas (like 19th-century mechanical aesthetics and 21st-century quantum physics) to invent something entirely unique. Working together under Bruce’s guidance, the scholars wired, assembled, and engineered intricate engine prototypes that felt equal parts industrial revolution and sci-fi future. The project forced teams to embrace trial and error, cross disciplines, and view abstract scientific ideas through a playful, artistic lens.
As Bruce explained during the challenge, combining history, storytelling, and design with hard technology gives young minds the exact kind of creative confidence needed to solve tomorrow’s complex problems. By the end of the workshop, the room was filled with humming, spinning, brass-and-iron quantum contraptions—and a whole new generation inspired to rethink what’s possible.
