When Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum decided to make a move and repurpose an 1876 gothic New England Church into a home, Steampunk gallery and workshop, little did they know Netflix would come ‘a knockin’.
This all new Netflix original home makeover series is designed to bring the cameras behind the scenes of the world’s most unique and eccentric homes – where how they appear on the outside is nothing like what’s hidden within.
Originally, the production company, Barcroft Productions wanted to send film crews to Bruce and Melanie’s previous Steampunk home in Sharon, MA.
However, Bruce and Melanie had just recently moved to Palmer, MA and Netflix thought their new home would even make a more compelling story.
Filmed over a 6-month period, production crews came on 3 separate occasions, each film day lasting between 12 and 14 hours.
Interviews were conducted with Bruce and Melanie apart from one another and then together on camera. The production process was thorough, and interviews were conducted with many of the craftsmen and artists and other professionals who worked on the Home/Church/Gallery/Studio transformation.
“The production team was dedicated and worked long days,” said Bruce. “A fantastic group of people, we really got to know them in the process and felt we were all talking the same language. Melanie and I felt very positive about the whole experience.”
A production crew consisted of 3 to 5 professionals depending on the shots they had planned for the day. Bruce said there was also some legal paperwork as well as waivers for everyone appearing on camera. It was cool to see behind the scenes and to see how the process works.
While they were here, Bruce and Melanie were having the Helioman sculpture permanently installed at the peak of the church’s 30 ft. ceiling. No small task!
The timing of this project also coincided with a gallery opening Bruce and Melanie were hosting for the town. There were many people who knew of this building as a functioning house of worship, throughout their lives in Palmer.
This gave folks an opportunity to see the changes inside for themselves and offer up their reaction to our Steampunk vision. The real surprise is, we don’t know what they said!
We will be as curious as other Netflix viewers to watch on July 20th and see how it came out. According to some media reviews and critics, the 30 min. episodes are being hailed as “inspiring”.
The idea of taking a look at ordinary homes from the outside, whose interior space reflects the passions and personalities of their creative owners, is the first Netflix Original foray into the home makeover genre.
As you can re-imagine, we have high-hopes. Stay tuned!
